Open Meeting Law

Scale of Justice

The Massachusetts Open Meeting Laws apply to governmental entities at the state, county and local levels.  In general these laws require that meetings of such entities be open to the public, that notice of such meetings be publicly posted and that accurate records of the meeting be maintained and also available to the public. The District Attorney is responsible for enforcing the Open Meeting Law in Bristol County. The District Attorney’s Office will only respond to requests for an inquiry after receiving a detailed written complaint in the mail. The District Attorney’s Office will not respond to complaints issued anonymously or by telephone / e-mail. The District Attorney’s Office will also not issue advisory opinions.
To request an examination or report a violation of the Open Meeting Law, send your paperwork to Assistant District Attorney James McKenna, Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, 888 Purchase Street, New Bedford, MA., 02740.Provided below are links to the Open Meeting Law itself, an abbreviated summary of the law and the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office’s educational handout regarding the Open Meeting Law.
