The State Police Detective Unit in Bristol County (SPDU Bristol) is a twenty-four person unit who are members of the Massachusetts State Police. The troopers are assigned to the Bristol District Attorney’s Office acting on behalf of the District Attorney as his law enforcement representatives. SPDU Bristol is comprised of a homicide unit, narcotic/gang unit and sexual assault unit. There also are two troopers assigned to investigate unsolved homicides and one trooper assigned to the regional Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) Task Force.

A detective lieutenant is the commanding officer of the unit. The homicide unit is comprised of one lieutenant, two sergeants and nine troopers. In addition to responding to all homicides in Bristol County the homicide unit also investigates other incidents such as suspicious, natural and accidental deaths, fraud and larceny complaints and sexual assault and child abuse cases. Many investigations are jointly worked with city and town law enforcement agencies within Bristol County. 

The State Police Narcotic unit assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney’s office is comprised of five troopers, one sergeant and one lieutenant. The unit investigates all narcotic, gang and gun investigations throughout the cities and towns within Bristol County. Although the unit primarily concentrates on upper level narcotic trafficking groups and organizations, street level groups are also targeted. The unit investigates a multitude of crimes involving gang and firearm violations. Officers assigned to the unit conduct undercover operations, surveillances and work with confidential informants. The officers also work with and local, state and federal authorities in a variety of situations including investigations, undercover operations and providing personnel support.
